We have great students, who also happen to be great musicians. We are a high poverty New York City public school and we have a very diverse population. We have students that come from different parts of the world. We have a lot of English Language Learners, as well as Special Education and Gifted and Talented students as well as general education students.
Our students love coming to school and I am grateful that I can enrich their lives through music.
My Project
All of the students that come to the music classroom use the keyboards. Starting in Kindergarten students learn to follow music notation. We have all of our music in the binders, and students are expected to look at the music while they are playing.
Unfortunately, the original music rests that came with the keyboards broke many years ago.
Music rest is a type of a music stand that attaches to the keyboard to hold the music. Currently students have binders on their pianos, but those have to lay flat, and that makes it very hard for our students to look at the music ( especially the lower grades that have to tip-toe to see the notes). Something as simple as having the music at their eye level will improve their piano playing dramatically.
