Help Us Read More Books!

My students need more books to read independently. I want to encourage them to become lifelong readers. Unfortunately, I don't have enough books in my library.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to read a book that you actually chose to read? You didn't have to read what others told you but instead, someone respected your choice. I would like to do that for my students. I want to offer them a variety of books that they can read at their level.

I teach a group of 27 first graders.

They believe that they are "readers" and take that role very seriously. They love books! Unfortunately, I don't have enough books to support their reading for the whole year. My students attend a public school in a large school district that has cut funding to schools year after year. My school is unable to fund the purchase of more library books. Please help my students have access to more books that they love. Your support will be long lasting since I will continue to use these books for future classes.

My Project

Typically students are expected to read the same story at the same reading level. Reality is that even though students are in the same grade level, they read at different levels and enjoy different types of books. I want to change what they have available to read. I would like to offer my students CHOICE in what they read. I believe the more students read, the better readers they will become. One of the best ways to achieve this is by teaching them to love books. Literature must be appealing to children. The books that I selected are very popular among young children. I know my students will be very excited to read them.

Reading provides access to knowledge.

Students are empowered when they are good readers because they have better access to other content areas. My first graders are starting to build a life as readers. Please help them become lifelong readers.
