Help Us Reach for the Stars with a Study of Astronomy!
My students need books about the solar system, interactive solar system models, and an activity tub to help expand their knowledge of the solar system.
Do you remember the first time you looked up at the night sky and wondered about the stars? Astronomy is a subject that continues to fascinate scientists because there is still so much to learn.
The school I teach at believes in differentiated instruction and student choice.
We want students to "think outside the box" and become problem solvers who can critically analyze the world we live in. Both parents and teachers are asked to commit extra time and money to support instruction that is highly engaging and hands on. My students have a broad range of interests and academic abilities that make it essential for me to find highly creative ways to teach them.
My Project
I would like my students to have access to materials that can better help them understand the solar system. Having activity tubs at the 1st - 3rd grade level and the 4th - 6th grade level will allow me to differentiate activities for different groups of students based on their interest and abilities. For example, some will be able to calculate gravity on other planets while others can explore the orbit of the Earth. I have asked for a variety of books so that children with different reading levels of students in my classroom will all have access to information about the solar system.
In this economic climate of budget cuts, science is usually the first subject to be trimmed off of schedules.
Yet when I asked my students what they wanted to learn about this year, science was the most popular subject in my classroom. Please help make sure that science stays a vital part of our curriculum now and for years to come.
