Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 150 seventh graders at a high needs school in the Bronx. Many of my students are recent immigrants, and about one-third receive special education services. They face daunting challenges everyday, including gang violence, hunger, and inadequate housing and health care. Despite the many obstacles in their lives, they come to school with incredible energy and a strong desire to learn.
My students want and need hands-on science experiences to motivate and challenge them during class. Since many of my students struggle with reading and are English language learners, hands-on experiences will not only help them understand science but also make them feel more confident about learning!
My students will be investigating geology and the Earth through a series of hands-on activities and labs by observing and making fossils, identifying minerals and their properties, and creating models of our Earth. All of the supplies will enable my students to complete these activities and provide basic supplies for activities throughout the rest of the year.
With your help, my 7th graders will be able to learn science by actually experiencing it! My students will feel like true scientists when they are engaged with the materials. Thank you so much for making it possible!
