This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow’s skills today.” As a teacher, one of my biggest concerns in making sure that I'm preparing my students for the future they'll face. A huge area of need for us is teaching them the technical skills they'll need to be successful today

I teach 9th grade special education in a Title 1 high school in the Bronx, one which focuses on teaching students to be critical thinkers and advocates for change.

In order to achieve this, we're trying to expose our students to a variety of courses that allow them to think and interact with the world around them, to prepare them for school and beyond. Our students are all required to complete research projects every year, and the seniors are asked to look at local issues and provide solutions. While the school offers students these opportunities through many social science lenses, we don't yet have a technical class that allows students to interact with these issues.

My Project

By attending this training, I will be able to bring a computer science class to my school. This will allows students the opportunity to learn valuable skills that will not only allow them to interact with local issues in a unique and practical way, but will also give them access to kinds of skills that will open many doors for them in college and beyond. Students will learn about problem solving, programming, data analysis, and robotics. Some of these skills will be able to directly translate to their other academic classes and their individual research projects.

Many of my students have expressed interest in technology and coding, and through this program we will be able to give them a way to explore this passion, helping them prepare for the realities of a changing job market, and give them a head start in deciding where their interest lies for college.

Additionally, I hope it will inspire more of our female students to take an interest in the variety of STEM classes we offer, through this fun introduction.
