This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Providing books for newly arrived students in their home language will allow them to strengthen their literacy skills in their native language. Research shows that literacy skills in a first language can enhance the ability to learn a second language, such as English, because it builds cognitive and language skills that are transferable. Access to books in Spanish can help students understand complex topics in a language they are comfortable with, making it easier for them to transition to English content and improve their overall academic performance.
Additionally, these books can support students’ mental health by creating a sense of inclusion and belonging. Reading material in their native language can ease feelings of isolation and anxiety, common among students in a new environment. Familiar language and cultural representation in books can provide comfort, build self-esteem, and offer a sense of connection to their culture, fostering a more welcoming and supportive classroom experience.
