My students need basic supplies so that they can learn comfortably. They need pens, pencils, paper and other basic classroom supplies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a small school of just about three hundred students in grades 9-12. We are located in the South Bronx, although our students do come from neighboring communities within the Bronx.
More than 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
We also have a several dozen students that are homeless or doubled up. These students do not have easy access to school supplies and basic essential supplies a teenager might need to thrive and succeed.
Thankfully, these students could get a strong start at the beginning of the school year if we are able to provide them with basic supplies that they might need.
My Project
Student learning is a struggle when students do not have basic supplies such as pens, paper and pencils. Additionally, they can be shy about asking for supplies for fear of being judged. By having a large amount of classroom supplies available at the beginning of the school year, hopefully our students will not feel stigmatized and will be in a place where they are focused on their learning 100%
We want to provide basic supplies to all students in need.
This includes pens, pencils, glue, scissors, paper and more. For example, my students need access to highlighters so that they can decode texts in their content classes such as ELA, Social Studies and Science. Also, they need access to index cards and filler paper so that they can take notes in class and study.
It might seem like these basic supplies are accessible to all but unfortunately, that is not true. Making sure all students have access to these supplies is so important. This will make a huge difference in our students' lives, as purchasing supplies each year can put extreme stress on their financial situation at home. By having the supplies they need, our students will be able to complete their lessons, as well as stay organized and maintain their work in folders and binders. It is amazing how much of a difference this could make on the lives of my students in need!
