My students need additional trash bins to expand our recycling program throughout the entire school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish. Besides learning in two languages, through our global competencies, students are learning about sustainability and becoming global citizens through our curriculum.
Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles from downtown Los Angeles, a city working on becoming more eco-friendly.
We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds. .
My Project
Our students started a classroom recycling program two years ago to do our part to help our environment. Students recycle plastic, aluminum cans, all paper goods and bottle caps. We try to recycle as much as we possibly can in our school community. With some of the money acquired from the plastic bottles and cans we have purchased a classroom membership to the World Wildlife Fund, which is an organization that helps with habitat restoration, sustainability and other environmental causes. We have symbolically adopted several animals currently endangered through WWF. We'd like to expand the program and have every classroom at our school participate in our recycling program and convert it into a school wide effort. Our students will be promoting the importance of recycling and the positive impact it has on our environment.
Tom's of Maine is a company dedicated to the sustainability of our planet.
They believe in using primarily recyclable materials, use eco-friendly ingredients and give back to the community. What better way to continue this effort then in the classroom where students can become leaders of the quest for sustainability and environmental causes. With the materials requested students will make promotional posters to describe the importance of recycling and present them to each classroom. Each classroom will be provided with a recycle bin to join our recycling efforts. We will also put on our research hats and calculate the amount of recycle we were able to acquire and investigate how we've helped the planet thus far.
