My Students
Children process grief in unique ways. It is not easy for them to verbalize their feelings. When they are allowed to work through their grief in creative ways, it allows them to deal with the difficult feelings. They also like to create something to remember their loved one.
Our students are in an area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.
Most are very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it, and often have to move in with relatives after job loss.
We have students that have military parents, some who have recently lost parents in service. This past veteran's day, some of the many students put together a play they designed to honor veterans. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly to provide materials for students and motivational rewards. They continually go above and beyond to help their students.
My Project
Students are excited when they can use creative materials. The scrapbooks will allow the students to create a personal keepsake, and at the same time work through their feelings of loss. The wide variety of supplies will allow many different ways to creatively work through their feelings. This project is inspired by the "Lily Sarah Grace Fund". It is my hope that a project that helps children deal with grief is a tribute to Lily, Sarah, and Grace. Many of my students are dealing with grief issues. Some due to the death of a parent, grandparent, or other close relative. For some it is the loss of a beloved pet. My students with military parents experience loss each time the parent is absent. Even the students with divorced parents go through stages of grief. Developmentally it is not easy for them to tell you their feelings, but when they can use creative media, they are often able to process these difficult feelings. This allows them to move forward with their lives.
Schools is about education and learning.
However, if students are dealing with issues such as grief, this can keep them from being able to fully engage in learning. That is the reason this project is important to the school. However, for me the reason I want to have this project funded is that I care about the issues my students face. I think this project can make a difference in their life. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Thank your for your consideration of the project.
