My Students

Do you remember what it was like to struggle with how you felt about yourself, or what it was like to face a difficult personal challenge. Children face many tough situations, and it is hard for them to ask for help, or to understand others also face similar struggles. These resources can help!

Our students are in an area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.

Most are very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it, and often have to move in with relatives after job loss. We have students that have military parents, some who have recently lost parents in service. This past veteran's day, some of the many students put together a play they designed to honor veterans. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly to provide materials for students and motivational rewards. They continually go above and beyond to help their students. I really love and respect my staff and students. I want to be able to help them succeed. I would really appreciate your help.

My Project

As a school counselor I try to help my student as they struggle with many different issues. It is hard for students to understand themselves and to know what to do. Resources that allow students to see that others have similar struggles or books that offer suggestions on how to deal with these difficult times can really help. Students need help as they work through normal growing up issues, as well as the tough issues that they face. Issues such as grief, bullying, honesty, and good decision making are just a few of the topics that students struggle with. These resources will be available to all students in the school based on the age appropriateness of each resource. Classrooms can use those that are appropriate for class discussions, as well as supplementing our school character program. Some of the resources can also be used for small group or individual discussions when needed. Often just learning that others face similar feelings and struggles helps empower the child.

Children need help dealing with feelings and issues.

Even if they talk to an adult about an issue, they are often better able to work through issues when they can read about others that face the challenges or books that give suggestions on how to handle situations. Our classrooms also need access to books that deal with these topics. If a child is dealing with unresolved grief or feels overwhelmed, they can not learn as well as they could without these issues. We appreciate any help! Thank you.
