Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids love telling stories, they love sharing. So why then do so many students struggle with writing, with telling their stories on paper? The structure of writing puts many students off. This doesn't have to be have so. When students are allowed to play with language, they learn.

My students live within the second largest school district in the nation.

It is an urban school where 48% of students receive free or reduced-price lunches. My students are curious about the world around them. They explore novelty and take meticulous details about interesting experiences.

My Project

I am requesting seven high-interest board games that reinforce English language skills. Each game was selected to reinforce a skill required of young writers. "Hidden Hints" is a game which helps students understand context clues. "You Have Been Sentenced" uses grammar rules to reinforce sentence structure. The "Sentence Dominoes" is a game that teaches similar skills. In addition, I have selected a "Rory's Story Cubes" which teaches story structure by having student create a story while they play. This game has expansion packs which can be used to introduce new genres. I have requested the science fiction expansion because this is a popular genre in my class.

There is an old saying, "Where your heart is, there also is your treasure." When students care about the work they are doing because it is fun, playful, and engaging they learn quicker and the lessons stay with them for much longer.
