This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are middle schoolers at a Title One school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes.
They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.
My students are active and enthusiastic. They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.
Our school is in a high needs, high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be and do better for themselves and for others.
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from having binders that will help them organize their work. Having tabs will allow them to separate their work so that they can easily access information when it comes time to review for unit exams or end of unit projects.
Part of teaching is helping students gain life skills like organization.
Having a three hole punch allows my students to further organize any handouts given, and allows for flexibility of resources to be added to their binders. The Post-Its will encourage my students to think about what they are reading as they jot down notes they read on the Post-Its. This will allow them to make their thinking about reading visually. Having pens will ensure that my students are prepared for class and no longer delaying their learning by not having something to write with. The packing tape will allow for charts and posters to be taped around the room so that students will have visual references throughout the school year.
All together, these materials will go a long way in both organizing my students, along with furthering their learning.
