This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of a large urban 9-12 secondary school in California. I work with students from every point on the spectrum... I have students who love reading, hanging out at the library, engaging in their world, thinking critically, imagining, creating, and learning. I also have students who have not quite discovered the magic of reading yet, haven't wandered outside of their insulated worlds, don't tend to ask questions and to ponder, don't recreationally research topics of interest. It is my hope that by making a few tweaks to the library, I will inspire even more students to visit the library and while they are there, feel inspired and capable of navigating it. It is also my hope that students who are already fans of the library will be in a position to find even more treasures they didn't know existed through better signage and posters. I hope to help all of my students succeed!

My Project

The school library is an essential space in the school. However, if it is dingy, uninspired, cluttered, challenging to navigate, dilapidated, then it is virtually useless. I want my students' school library to motivate them, to be simple to navigate, to provide wisdom and clarity by just looking at the walls.

It is my hope that by incorporating more signage, cleaner lines, and updated decor and storage that more students will use the library and those who already do, will gain even greater meaning from their experience.

I want to model how my students might consider organizing their own learning areas at home.
