My Students
This is a can of worms we WANT to open! The K/1/2 students at the Nelson School wish to expand their role as school recyclers, by beginning a worm composting project. We want this to be our classroom's focus, as part of our school's new initiative to create gardens on our school grounds.
The K/1/2 students are an enthusiastic, curious, and nature loving bunch!
They relish every opportunity they are given to interact with nature, and always extend their learning beyond the school day by recruiting their families in their learning adventures. They love working as part of our larger K-6 multi-grade school community and are very committed to sharing in the work of the school. They are eager to be "in charge" of the composting project, a natural extension of their established role as the school recyclers.
My Project
Worms are the perfect match for this age, as they are plentiful and easy to handle, while also being fascinating creatures. Worms are a current area of study, but the composting project would really elevate this study and bring worms into our lives on a daily basis, all throughout the year. The opportunity to work with worms and be their caretakers over a three year period will be an amazing experience for them and their knowledge will grow through experiential hands-on learning. This is a unit of study which will benefit them throughout their lives, and beginning this work at such a young age will help lay the groundwork for them to become future environmentalists. It will also provide them with a highly meaningful and critical role in our all school gardening project.
A special benefit of this project will be to build relationships with community members beyond our school walls.
There are many experienced vermicomposters and gardeners in our small town and bringing them in to serve as mentors will enable our project to spread beyond our group of children.
