One of my favorite quotes is by Albert Einstein "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." I don't like the word stupid, but for some of my students they get called that by their peers and their parents.
My students are fun, talented people that need some extra support.
As a teacher of students with special needs, my students face many obstacles. Most of these obstacles are being compared to their general education peers and not meeting that expectation. The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities. Many of them have obstacles to overcome at home and find it difficult to come to school. Our department serves students with a range of disabilities, including cognitive impairment, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Most of our students have been diagnosed with ADHD or going through the process of. A typical student in my class reads 2 grade levels below their grade level. Of our students population 15% are students with disabilities and about 25% of our students come from economic hardship.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students have already been put to use. As this is the second project that I am requesting for fidgets for my students. My students have used these so much that the supplies that were donated last year are breaking due to wear and tear.
Students with ADHD need to move, they get that movement in my classroom.
Please help me give this gift to them by learning through movement. Most of the students like the bouncy bands on the desk. These are really great as students can bouncy their feet and it does not distract others around them. Also students with emotional needs love the stress balls to squeeze when they can't regulate their emotions. These are the most used out of the fidgets I have. I would also like some new fidgets as the chew-able pencil toppers and the fidget cubes. I am seeing more students putting things in their mouths and the pencil toppers would help them. As I work with students who need to improve their social skills, we need games to help us improve these skills like the emotion game. My students also need supplies like pencils and dry erase markers along with a pencil sharpener to write and complete homework.
