My students need 8 different sensory items or interventions to help them be successful in the classroom. I need 5 chart tablets and flair pens to make writing great!
Have you ever gotten the feeling in your body that you just cannot sit still any longer? It might start in your toes and it slowly works its way up to your legs, up your arm and finally to your finger tips. This feeling spreads until you can no longer take it and you must stand up or move.
Imagine feeling this way all of the time, in a place where you are supposed to sit still at your desk for most of the day!
These are the sensory issues that some of my students are dealing with. I am trying to make our learning environment a place where they could feel comfortable and be themselves. I would like to provide them various opportunities to move so that they can be successful learners. While my students are in a Gifted and Talented classroom, many of them have sensory needs that sometimes stand in the way of their learning. By providing them with these various outlets to move, their brain will be stimulated enough to be a successful student.
My Project
In donating to this project, you would be providing students with objects such as fidget cushions to make sitting more comfortable, fidget toys to keep these students' hands busy and different colored pens that they can use for writers' workshop. Each color represents a different step to the writing process, making it much more visible for visual learners. In addition, by providing the chart tablets requested, I will be able to pull small groups together to work on one piece of writing on the large chart tablet. In addition, I will be able to provide students with model pieces of writing to help their writing be more successful.
If you help to provide the requested sensory resources to my students, please understand what a world of difference you will make in their learning endeavors.
You will help them to remain focused, rather than being bogged down with the need to move constantly. In turn, they will be able to think and produce the work that they are truly capable of. Next time you feel that intense urge to move your body, think about my students and how these resources could help take that feeling away!
