My students need fun, interactive, and hands-on ways to learn "sight words", which are tricky English words that we use all the time, but cannot be sounded out when you are reading them (think 'what', 'there' and 'her').
I live and work on the beautiful island of Oahu in a very impoverished and diverse community. My students love coming to school, and I love making our classroom feel like home for them.
My students need a more interactive way to learn their sight words, which are words that are very common in the English language, but do not follow regular reading rules. Words like 'her', 'said', and 'where' are very hard to memorize, and my group of active kindergarteners need more interactive methods of instruction to help these important lessons sink in!
I have one sight word DVD and my students LOVE IT! We watch it, say the words and write them as they appear on the screen, and they never get tired of it! Most importantly, they like learning words this way, and know every single word on the DVD by heart! I found two more DVDs in the series I am requesting in this project, as well as, flash cards, flash card games, teacher books with worksheets, student books and fun games I can use for lesson planning, along with easy readers that focus on reinforcing sight words!
Your gift to my project will help save my students from repetitive lessons and the the frustrations that go along with the struggle to learn tricky sight words. With these new books, games, movies, and activities, my class won't even know they are working when they practice reading these words, and they will be able to see the results in their quickly rising reading levels! The more sight words a student knows, the more their fluency improves and they have more time and mental space to sound out tricky words and focus on reading comprehension!
