This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an urban charter school. Our class will be exploring forces and energy. We will begin by looking into the differences between weight and mass.
Because our school is 90% minority and 90% low-income, we are lacking in hands-on scientific equipment. I have a generic bathroom scale to demonstrate weight, but need a more concrete way to demonstrate mass.
The balance beam scale will help create an understanding of both mass and weight. The demonstration will show students that mass compares the mass of two objects, not just one object and the force of gravity.
This basic knowledge is something that is required throughout their scientific education. You will make it possible for my students to succeed in their future scientific endeavors.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
