I am teaching a class of amazing 6th graders with diverse backgrounds and skills, including many students with special needs. Our social studies curriculum is focused on the entire Eastern Hemisphere- we will be learning all about the culture, people, and geography of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. We are located in a high needs, inner city middle school in New York.
Most of my students haven't had the chance to explore anywhere outside of their own neighborhoods. In our global world, my students must be able to understand the identities of others in order to understand themselves. I am hoping to be able to make history come alive in front of their eyes. I want them to become true historians and gain a sense of the entire global community.
But, unfortunately, we don't have the resources we need in the classroom, let alone the resources needed to engage all of our students who are receiving special education services. We need a multimedia projector so that we can experience the richness of the world as a class. With one, we will be able to connect what we are learning in our text books to global travel and geographical regions. I will be able to project art from ancient Mesopotamia, photographs of Egyptian pyramids, and video clips displaying life in other schools and cities throughout Asia and Europe! The students will even have the chance to use the projector to present their own projects on countries of their choosing!
With your help, the scholars will be able to truly understand the complexities of the world. Our projector will be used daily so history will never be boring. My students will be able to understand the differences and similarities between their lives and the lives of others. They will even be able to expand their world view and travel to foreign places without leaving their classroom. They will have the chance to use their individual creativity and learn about technology. Please help to make my class a memorable and far reaching experience for my students!
