My students need blocks, bridge building kits, and skill sticks. These items will provide the children with options when working in groups to construct bridges.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom consists of students working independently & within small groups. By the end of the year, I want my students to think critically about architecture, particularly bridge design. I believe this can only take place through hands on experiences with design and construction.
My students are a lovable bunch who enjoy working hands on with different items.
Once their curiosities are piqued there's no stopping the flow of questions that arise in their minds. They're smart, motivated, and love to learn about different things. They work very hard and enjoy seeing the fruit of their labor, which has been the result of high levels of motivation in my classroom.
My school is classified as a Title 1 school, meaning the majority of the students in my school come from low-income families. Having access to quality materials at school is crucial to the improvement of their learning experience. To the best of my ability, I want to tap into potential areas of interest that may have gone undiscovered had children not had exposure to learning experiences. I truly do see future designers, architects, artists, engineers and great potential, they just need those who are willing and able to invest in them. I am willing, I hope you are too!
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used towards centers time in my classroom. During centers time, students will have the opportunity to go to different centers, each center focusing on a different activity. For instance, at the art center, children will be able to design their own bridges and use a variety of materials to decorate them. At the bridge experiment center, children test different experiments related to building and bridge design. At the building design center, children design their own buildings incorporating different architectural features we have been learning about. The materials requested would be used at the bridge building center, where children will work together to problem solve and build different types of bridges. As we delve further into the study, children will learn about other bridge features and be expected to incorporate those into their designs. I currently do not have many materials for this center and that is the reason for my request. I am requesting blocks, bridge building kits, and skill sticks. These items will provide the children with options when working in groups to construct the bridges.
Donations to this project will do a variety of things for my classroom.
Knowing there are people out there who believe in what they are learning & care to invest in their experience will mean a lot to them. It will also improve their hands-on experience & make them feel like true architects. Many of the materials requested, particularly the K'nex sets are things they've never worked with before so I know they will be excited to work with & this will be an experience they will never forget!
