Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school has been serving Pre-K through 5th grade students and their families in the Houston ISD community for 15 years. The school offers two-way and transitional bilingual programs, skills for learning and living (SLL), and ancillary programs in physical education, technology, art, and music. The campus consistently offers opportunities for students to engage in cross-cultural activities through programs and presentations for the parents and families of their community.
The majority of students at my campus come from Hispanic and African-American families.
Over half of the students enrolled are English Language Learners (ELL) and over 80% qualify for the Free and Reduced Price Lunch program. The students campus-wide benefit from the inclusion offered by their special area classrooms.
My Project
Our campus has suffered damage due to Hurricane Harvey, causing us to lose time and materials essential to student learning in music classes. Many general music instruments, music recordings, and print materials are now unusable.
My students needs instruments, musicals, and materials to maximize their exposure to the cross curricular learning opportunities Music provides.
Recorders will help teach upper grades about theory, performance, and etiquette through performance. Musicals will provide students materials for community programs for parents and families. General music instruments will help solidify musical concept learning in younger grades to prepare them for more rigorous music activities. The addition of these materials will help our school and students start their year off right after suffering so much!
