My Students
What was the best school project you have ever done? The one you still remember, or even still have all these yours later? My students need plaster of paris and paint and to recreate an ancient Egyptian mummies in our room.
I am the Art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.
We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students for Art every week, from Kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.
My Project
In order to make the masks, we need plaster gauze to shape the masks, and then acrylic paint to decorate them. This project will benefit the students in so many ways. They will be exposed to an ancient culture that they are already interested in, learn about rites of passage, tools and technology of the ancient world, and ancient symbols. They will also learn about physical and chemical changes with the plaster and the paint, so Science is also incorporated into this lesson. Math is incorporated in terms of symmetrical design, and writing (in hieroglyphics) will also be included. Besides including so many academic advantages, the students will get an opportunity to express themselves and learn the processes for using materials they have not had the opportunity to work with before.
Your help will ensure that my students get to have an art experience they will never forget, and they will all have an art project that they can be proud of for years to come.
You can make learning fun and exciting for my students, especially since this is a project that goes along with their interests. Please donate to my project.
