My Students
My loves are first graders in a large urban district. They work hard against pretty incredible challenges, to learn to read, write, explore, and love math! As inclusion students, these children have special learning needs or are compassionate, kind models for children who do. This environment brings out the best in these six and seven year olds, but they need all the help they can get in maintaining this tall task through the school year in a rigorous academic environment!
My Project
Magnatiles are magnetic tiles that made in various shapes. The shapes attach easily and come apart easily. Allowing children to build three-dimensional shapes, regardless of learning struggles. They are especially helpful for students struggling with fine motor issues. They are wonderful for everyone.
In first grade, we have to learn to make three-dimensional shapes out two-dimensional shapes.
We cut paper into shapes and tape the pieces together. We usually only get one shape per group, because organizing the tape and paper is challenging for six year olds. With Magnatiles we could build shapes, have meaningful conversations about the attributes of shapes, and subtract the frustration from the equation!
