My Students

A parent of a former student said "All I know is if you can get classes of ninth graders to wear handmade chemistry element tee shirts all day you have got something going on!" I am in a new school where 85 percent of my students are on free and reduced lunches and I need your help this time.

My students are fun, creative and energetic ninth graders.

Our school has the highest poverty rating of the high schools in our city. After the first few weeks of school, you begin to notice that some students have the same things on for days. They are often sitting in stained clothes and clearly uncomfortable. My job is to teach science, yet I spend most one on one time nurturing students. Our school is located in the arts section of town and I try to incorporate art into our classroom whenever possible. Give them a task that infuses science and art, they jump for joy! My students are very interested in the environment. This helps as our course is Environmental Science. They take in new learning and wonder how they can make personal changes that will help the environment.

My Project

Tee shirts contain statements. I want, NO NEED, my students to make a statement about the environment. In class we will make tee shits, using paints and stencils, that advertise the importance of the environment around us. Students will spend time planning, even researching other tee shirt ideas. They will draw out their plans and make sure their plans will work on a tee shirt. Not only will they create some cool environmental art, but they will have a new piece of clothing to wear. They will also be thinking of you and your gift each time they wear it.

Your support will allow my students to apply their learning by creating an environmental design for a tee shirt.

hey will have the chance to advertise their learning...HOW COOL! Your support will also help put clothing on the backs of students. Science + Art + Clothing = CHANGE! I still have the pictures of my students from 7 and 11 years ago, the two times I made tee shirts with students. Plus parents are still talking about it!
