My Students

Our class motto is: Relentlessly Pursuing Excellence! Though we are a music class, we use music as a means to develop life skills like thinking and responsibility. We work as a team to create and enjoy high quality music.

Our school serves a high-poverty, at-risk student population in an urban setting.

With roughly 80% of our students on the Free & Reduced Lunch program, many students struggle to pay for instrument rental or supplies. That said, the students in the music program go beyond the excuses to find ways to reach their potential. They overcome diversity and adversity while supporting each other in achieving success.

My Project

We strongly believe that music is a performance art. In developing this craft, music students put in hours of practice and preparation. Usually, this growth is only seen by the student and teacher. We wanted to allow families to see the growth, as well as create a pedagogically based system for assessment of student growth.

Creating an online portfolio of each student's musical mastery allows their parents to view and comment on their progress.

Because our school serves an urban and economically challenged area, many students do not have the ability to practice in their homes. Therefore, the families do not regularly experience the great work being done by their students. This portfolio project puts video clips of individual student performances into an online portfolio. These portfolios become a record of mastery in a number of different aspects of musicianship, as well as a portal through with family members can encourage and interact with portfolio entries.

To set up this portfolio project with fidelity, we need the ability to easily access, record and upload videos. We will use the iPad Pro primarily for recording student work, as well as for using various apps to support music education in our classroom.
