Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year, I want all my students to learn as much as possible in order to be a success academically. In my 2nd and 3rd grade multi-age classroom the biggest challenge is creating and trying out different approaches in order to close the huge achievement gap.

Our elementary school is located in inner city Richmond, California, where 100% of our students receive free lunches.

We have a nice group of mostly Latino and some African American students who dream of being doctors, lawyers, and soccer players, much like all kids. Due to disadvantages in our community, there is a huge achievement gap in our school and district as a whole. There is a range of several years in levels of reading, writing, and math all our classes. In my 2nd and 3rd grade multi-age class, my students are currently working at the kindergarten to 2nd grade level.

My Project

I am in my 3rd year as a teacher in a 2/3 multi-graded class, I’ve created leveled curriculum that is available online using the district provided tablets during the day. Having 70% of our materials online allows students to download assignments at their level and work at their own pace. Having notebook computers from Donors Choose that students can take home at night will allow students that don’t have a computer at home (80% of the class) to continue working at home. (Most assignments are on Google Docs, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.) Students will also be able to use these two notebooks in class as well, in that as many as 7 tablets are non-functional on any given day. The notebook computers are much more dependable, and it will allow students to access assignments on days when their tablets are not working. In addition, use of technology to this extent in the classroom goes a long way in addressing the achievement gap and preparing students for future academic success.

This project will improve our classroom by giving students access to 2 computers at home, as well as at school.

Although district provided tablets are used in our class, the small screen size, lack of programs, and lack of dependability make tablets much less functional than a full functioned notebook. Letting students use these notebooks at home will help students integrate technology into their life, instead of never using a computer except for 35 minutes once a week in the computer lab.
