This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in a low-income and high poverty rural community. I teach in a self-contained Exceptional Student Education classroom to students with intellectual disabilities and language difficulties in 3rd through 5th grade. They are a wonderful and diverse group who deserve the best that life can offer them. While all children are special in their own way, these kiddos are truly INSPIRING!

At our school, the motto is: to Learn, Grow, and Achieve, and I am always amazed by my students’ ability to do just that while overcoming all of the challenges that they face each and every day.

I love to see my students arrive at school each day, with smiles on their faces, excited and motivated to learn something new. This year we are faced to the added challenge of teaching students that are both physically in the classroom as well as a few that are joining us from home. I strive to give each of them every opportunity to reach their fullest potential. I want my students to experience pride in their achievements. I am blessed to be able to witness them light up as they learn about themselves and the world around them.

My Project

When a student walks into their classroom at the beginning of the school year they are surrounded by new and exciting things that they can't wait to explore, and I want my kiddos to have that! My students are typically with me year after year until they go to middle school. A new assortment of materials will make all the difference in my class. My kindergarten thru 5th grade Special Education students need a wide variety of materials on a range of grade levels. In many cases we make these materials ourselves.

Many of my students are just beginning the journey to a lifelong love of reading.

They are so excited to learn to read on their own, instead of depending on someone to read to them. I would like to create new Reading and Writing centers in my classroom that they will actually be excited to participate in. I will use the requested materials to create (and organize/store) fun and engaging academic Reading centers for my students to use during our Language Arts block. I will also make each student their own individual sight word picture book to use independently at their desk. I can even send these home for my online students to use!
