My Students
Do you remember the line: "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down?" Many of my students have never heard of the childhood classic "The Three Little Pigs!" Imagine how much fun my students will have learning classic children's stories and retelling them on a felt board or with puppets!
I teach in a Title I school in Oklahoma where 90% of students receive free or reduced price lunches.
These children live in poverty, but they are eager to learn! This year's class is made up of children who love math but are not very interested in reading yet. At math time we do a lot of hands on activities so it is very interactive and the children are engrossed in their learning. Unfortunately, when it comes down to sitting still while a story is being read it is a different matter altogether! My students come from backgrounds where they have not been read to a lot at home, so they have not yet learned the joys that reading can bring. I need some interactive materials to make our reading time more engaging for these students!
My Project
I have a puppet theater that is very popular during center time - not only do the students line up to be puppeteers, many enjoy being in the audience! I am hoping that this interest will carry over to our story time if I use felt board pieces and puppets as I read. The students would also be able to use these items during center time to retell the stories - either from memory or while listening to the included compact discs, which will help them with comprehension skills as well!
I believe that kindergarten should be a safe, fun place where children learn to love learning.
These materials would help me to instill a love of reading and story telling in my students. Your donation will mean that 18 children get a chance to learn classic stories like "The Little Red Hen", "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and "The Gingerbread Man" to name just a few.
