My students need puppets and puzzles that facilitate play and all of its accompanying benefits: using and experimenting with language, developing creativity and imagination, and learning how to collaborate and problem-solve with peers!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students of our room are a kind, curious, brave and diverse group of learners! Their brains are busy absorbing language, growing their reading and writing skills, and problem-solving with peers.
Our school community serves students from mainly low-income families.
The vast majority of our students are ELLs from homes where Chinese and Spanish are spoken. They need lots of engaging, meaningful opportunities to practice speaking, reading, and writing in English. They love to read, act out stories, and build things!
My Project
There is much research to support the fact that play is integral to learning in the early childhood grades. It is through play that children build and practice language, learn critical problem-solving skills, and engage in meaning-making processes that extend into their reading, writing, math, and science work. For English Language Learners in particular, play provides a safe and creative space to freely practice and experiment with English.
Unfortunately, my classroom does not yet have appropriate resources to engage students in creative and thoughtful play, and that's where puppets and puzzles come in!
Puppets are especially useful for facilitating dramatic reenactments of books and stories.
Puzzles engage students in the development of spacial awareness, fine motor, and problem-solving skills.
