This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a high school social studies teacher in an inner-city Houston school. Many of our students have been hit by the devastation as a result of Hurricane Harvey. In addition, I am working in a brand-new program at our school designed to help those students who have fallen 2-3 years behind to get back on track in order to graduate with their class. Many of the students we serve in our program, Project Beyond Belief, fare additional struggles because they are teen parents, living in a non-traditional family situation, and are often the breadwinners for their families. These kids have not been successful in the traditional school setting. We at Chavez High School sought to remedy this situation by creating a non-traditional program that will ensure student success! These students rotate between 4 core area teachers (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) in order to receive face-to-face instruction as well as support for online credit recovery courses during the day as well as instruction from a graduation coach. Additionally the program focuses on social skills and emotional well-being. Other staff within our program are two dropout prevention specialists, social workers, and counselors.
My Project
If we are able to get our project funded these tables will allow a group of 120 students to get back on track in order to graduate with their class. These are at-risk students who have not been successful in the traditional school setting. We do not throw students away at CHSl and Project Beyond Belief will make graduation a possibility and a reality!! Students will be afforded access to their peers and to their teachers in order to be successful in the subjects needed to graduate! Teachers will be able to do daily check-ins with small groups as well as facilitate work on computers and teach lessons in a traditional manner with the ease of being able to collaborate successfully. Research shows when students are able to work collaboratively and discuss the the material being studied they are more apt to remember the material. We want these tables in order to facilitate this. Additionally, we would like the water in order to have them on hand. Our students are the kind for whom the traditional classroom setting didn't work. They will use any excuse possible to leave class. If we have water available that is one less excuse for them to ask to leave the classroom.
