I teach Physical Education at an elementary school located in North Miami. My students now have recess in addition to PE, which means that the demand for physical education supplies has almost doubled in order to accommodate all students.
My school has a high number of students who were affected after Hurricane Irma devastated our community and now we are welcoming students from Puerto Rico who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
My school also has a high number of students who are high poverty, ESOL, and ELL, and there are a few who are Special Education and gifted.
Our students love to exercise, but due to the devastation of the hurricanes, the parks, and surrounding grounds are still not safe for them to play in.
My Project
In this project, we are asking for a 30-inch heavy duty fan to cool down the P.E. court. The P.E. holds many PE classes throughout the day and it gets very hot and uncomfortable after 10 am.
Our court is also used for team games, lineup in the morning, school-wide assemblies, and pep rallies.
Throughout the year we have many games, pep rallies, and other outdoor activities in the court. Many times we have to cut our activities short or cancel because of the heat index.
We are asking for the fans such as the 30-inch high-velocity black floor fan, in order to make the P.E. court more comfortable for our students.
We are also asking for 50 water bottles so that the students on our team can stay hydrated. Many students come to school without water bottles for P.E. or when they have games, which is not safe or healthy as they can quickly become dehydrated with the heat in Miami.
