My students come from a low-income/high poverty area and are very diverse, both in race and socioeconomic status. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many have experienced trauma and have some tough home lives, but that doesn't bring them down. They come to school every day and are very eager to learn.
Even with all their struggles, my students work very hard and take great pride when they accomplish a tough lesson.
They are enthusiastic about learning and excited to explore new learning opportunities every day!
My Project
To promote social distancing and offer scholars the most individualized instruction possible, most of our core instruction takes place in small groups of 6-8 students. Scholars meet with their classroom teacher (me), with a certified academic interventionist, with additional paraprofessionals, and, if applicable, with resource room support each day during their small group 'rotations.'
Scholars also have an independent station where they work on a variety of programs to reinforce content taught in class and to enrich their learning.
At this station, scholars may be completing a math puzzle, practicing fact fluency, or working on their computer on programs such as DreamBox or Lexia. To keep scholars safe at this station, I would like to stock my classroom with cleaning wipes that are safe to use on their Chromebooks and on other classroom technology. I'd also like to supply a huge bottle of hand sanitizer at this station.
To keep the whole class safe, I'd also like to replace the filters in our Bissell air purifier. This purifier works hard every day to clean the air in our classroom, and it is time to replace our filters! This keeps us all germ-free and breathing healthy air. Finally, I'd like to provide scholars with individual reading trackers to help them track their reading during small groups. I'm hoping for a class set of reading trackers so that scholars do not need to share supplies.
