After Hurricane Helene, our school district has been hit hard with shortages in clay, supplies, and even the labor needed to support our Ceramics and Visual Arts programs. To make matters trickier, our kiln is out of commission while we work on repairs and replacements, which has made teaching ceramics this year a real challenge.
But where there’s a challenge, there’s also an opportunity!
We hope to temporarily swap our usual clay-based projects for alternate (and innovative) forms of sculpture. With your support, my students can dive into exciting new media like precious metal jewelry sculpting, fiber construction, metal embossing, and even drypoint printmaking. They've likely never encountered contemporary forms of craft like these before, and I’m so excited for them to explore new ways of thinking in 3D! Not only will they get to work with new materials, but they’ll also build skills that will stretch their creativity and grow their confidence as artists.
I believe every student should have an equal chance to create, no matter what’s happening in the world around them. This project will make that possible—and I know it’s something they’ll remember for a lifetime. Let’s make it happen together!
