it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.” -O. Fred Donaldson
My classroom is located in Washington State at a Title 1 school.
Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At Hazel Valley, 80-85% of students qualify for free and reduced school lunch. There are so many experiences we wish we could have with our students if only we had the means.
My Project
Children learn best when they’re having fun and children have fun when they are playing! Play based learning gives children the freedom to experiment and discover concepts at their own pace and in their own way. These are the reasons why I am incorporating a play workshop into my second grade curriculum.
The K'NEX will go into my building play center so that kids can create cars, buildings, and anything they can think of.
The games and bowling set will go into my game center so that kids can learn to follow directions, negotiate taking turns, and work on their sportsmanship. The art supplies will go into my art center so that kids can draw, color, and use their imagination to create.
You can help buy my little engineers K'NEX, my artists supplies, and my thinkers challenging games to grow their brains. These activities naturally spark curiosity in every young learner. Not only will my students grow academically, socially, and emotionally; the materials and the play workshop will let children be children.
