Help Us Improve Our Reading Through Technology!

My students need headphones to listen to audio stories to improve reading fluency. We need a new projector cart for our projector and ELMO.

My Students

First grade emergent readers need stories read aloud everyday to improve reading fluency and comprehension. Audio books support reading fluency and research shows that reading everyday will improve reading skills which can in turn help in all academic areas.

The students in our classroom come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.

Our school is an inclusive setting that teaches students with disabilities in the same classrooms with students who are typically developing. The students love learning together and need the opportunity to share skills. The students are a diverse learning community that works together. Inclusive education means that children who reflect the demographics of the surrounding region,including children who develop typically, children with special needs and children who are gifted, learn side by side. My school's model allows for the individual needs of each child to be addressed in a manner that enhances each child’s strengths while also addressing learning needs. My students have so many great ideas and work samples they want to share with their peers. They are excited and inspired to achieve their potential when they can teach through their work.

My Project

Learning to read is crucial to a student's success in school. Students need multiple means of accessing reading materials. A listening center will allow students additional means of reading various books. The listening center will provide books and colorful digital books with audio text. Our projector and ELMO will enhance lessons to strengthen phonics and spelling. Our classroom is fortunate to have had an ipod touch, projector and ELMO funded through Donors Choose. To create a listening center we need headphones so we can maximize the use of the ipod touch. The projector cart will provide a place for us to set up our new tools. Using these tools will allow us to make the new technology available to all students. Students can benefit from reading being properly modeled and from using technology to strengthen reading skills such as decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
