My Students
When my students think of "libraries" they think of white walls, books, and required reading; not the most exciting associations. Our library wants to break the stereotype of libraries being "boring" and "quiet" places. We want to energize our space and make it inviting for teenagers. We want to do more hands on projects with them and really expand our "makerspace" to get them to do more projects and CREATE.
We have an amazing amount of diverse students from all walks of life and from different economic backgrounds.
Even though they are diverse, they all have benefited from the library and we want to offer them more than just resources, we want to offer them a space where they can play and create and most importantly where they can feel welcome.
My Project
We are seeking arts and crafts supplies to start Maker Monday projects with our students.
We really want our students to do more creative hands on projects.
We will teach them how to do screen printing and block printing and allow them to bring in items they want to print on. We are doing units on weaving and will demonstrate different methods of weaving and what materials (like old t-shirts and tree branches) can be used for weaving. We will study origami and paper folding. And will will even show them how to make books from recycled paper. Our focus will mainly be re-purposing old materials. F
Each Monday during lunch students will be able to come into the library and learn how to make something new.
These craft supplies will be available in the library so students can come in and practice what they've learned.
We already have sewing machines, weaving, a "breakerspace" and games for students to play but with limited funds it is a challenge to keep supplying craft materials and we want to expand to cover more interest.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
