I teach in a Title I school where more than half of the students enrolled are below the poverty level. We are in an area that was hit by a devastating tornado a couple of years ago and the community has come together to rebuild, but we still have students that are in need.
These kids are resilient and so many truly want to learn.
So many lack the support they need to really immerse themselves in school. There are things that all students need in order to become lifelong learners. These are the things that teachers often struggle to provide.
My Project
Having a large classroom library is important in an English Class. My students read independently every day as part of their learning process. It's important that we have books in the classroom for the students who can't check out from the school library for any reason.
We have a large library that is ever growing, but we always need space to hold the books we acquire as the year progresses.
We add anywhere from 50-100 books each school year, and we are running out of space very quickly.
These bookshelves will give us more room to grow in the coming school year. The shelves will also provide a storage solution for students to keep our new textbooks in the classroom instead of carrying them around all day.
More than half of students from low‑income households
