Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is unique because the majority of our students are second language learners. Many of them are refugees from countries that are riddled with poverty, violence, and prosecution. Our neighborhood is one that struggles with poverty and hunger. 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. We also partner with Feeding America to bring groceries to the families twice a month.

Despite the obstacles facing these students and their community, they are determined, intelligent and eager to succeed.

We have a wonderful opportunity to learn about many different cultures and languages. The students develop a respect for one another that is built on trust and friendships.

My Project

My students are fortunate enough to each have their own tablet to use throughout the day. They access amazing programs like Raz-Kids, ST math, Scholastic news, and Starfall. These are a great resource to sharpen their skills, learn new skills, and be exposed to academic English. Despite these programs being so beneficial, they also require the volume to be turned up. When there are more than a few students accessing them at once it becomes quite noisy. The headphones I am requesting will fit their smaller ears and will allow them to listen to their devices at a proper volume.

Many of our students are refugees from a variety of countries.

They come to America with little to no personal belongings and usually no English. Having access to technology is an amazing resource for these students. They are able to get basic concepts of print by viewing texts with moving highlighted words and listen to someone read to them.

The problem we face is that it can get very noisy and distracting when a number of students are on their devices at the same time. It is important to have students have the opportunities to use their technology. However, without having the full experience they are missing out. I have tried collecting and using traditional ear buds. They don't work because they are too large for my students' tiny ears. They fall out and get very tangled.
