My Students

I am a speech-language pathologist at a K-8 Charter school on Chicago’s south side. Students on my caseload have a wide range of educational diagnoses, including language-based learning disabilities, articulation disorders, developmental and/or intellectual disabilities such as Autism Spectrum disorder, and difficulty speaking with fluency (also known as stuttering). Many of my students struggle with their basic reading and writing skills, whereas others struggle to communicate their basic wants and needs. I am a part of each student’s team, and help develop their individualized education programs (IEPs). IEPs promote each student’s success in school, and in life once they graduate.

My Project

The materials in this project will be crucial to the learning of students on the speech and language caseload at CICS Basil.

As addressed by the American Speech Language Hearing Association, poor classroom acoustics can result in excessive noise that is disruptive to the learning process and may negatively affect speech perception, student behavior, and educational outcomes.

All students can be affected by poor acoustics, not just those with hearing loss. This includes students with learning disabilities, developmental delays, speech and/or language disorders, auditory processing difficulties, attention deficits, and those learning English as a second language which encompasses the majority of students on the caseload.

At our school, there are two speech pathologists. This means there are usually two sessions going on at once, with 1-2 scholars each (up to four scholars total in the room). There are very high ceilings and large vents, which create sound reverberation and reflection (sound bouncing and striking off of a surface). Most of the speech sessions do not begin and end at the same time, and transitioning inevitably creates noise when moving the desk and chairs. It is difficult or impossible to hear student productions 80% of the time when two sessions are going on at once, which is the majority of the day. This puts a strain on our voices, scholar voices, and is incredibly frustrating for all parties because neither the teacher nor student knows if their production was correct.

This project includes a combination of materials to reduce noise and reverberation, as well as provide equity of learning materials and office supplies across clinicians.
