My Students
"To learn and not to do is really not to learn. To know and not to do is really not to know.”
Stephen R. Covey
I try to give my students hands-on experiences that they lack outside of the classroom as much as I possibly can. I believe wholeheartedly in the quote I have stated above.
My students LOVE to learn!
Learning by doing is something that is so exciting for them but also for me as their teacher. they are little sponges that get so excited by sometimes the simplest learning experiences. I wish that all the donors could be here to see how their little eyes light up when they discover something on their own. It is amazing and probably why I feel like I have the best job in the world!
65% of our school is on free and reduced cost lunch meaning that most of my students have impoverished backgrounds. That is why it is so important to me as their teacher to give them as many 'real life' experiences as I can while they are with me. Our school is a great big family and honestly the whole school will benefit from this donation because we get so excited about the things we learn and we share these experiences with all the students at our school.
My Project
My students are required to learn about life cycles and what characteristics baby animals have to their parents as part of our science curriculum. The best way that I have found to do this is to hatch chicken eggs. The amount of learning that takes place doing this project is beyond what we are "required" to learn. Students will use the incubator from this project to hatch the eggs. Students learn about life cycles. As their teacher I also integrate reading, writing and math into the project. Students are required to fill out job applications for things like egg turner, temperature controller and chick handler. We talk about how they will have to fill out job applications when they grow up. This is an example of real world application in my classroom. Something that is so important!
By having our own incubator, we will not have to rely on outside sources to provide one.
This year we barely made the cut to hatch chicken eggs and I really would like to avoid that in the future by having our own incubator. It is so worth the money to be able to have this project each year in my classroom. Students come back in later years to tell me they remember the chicks....they always remember the chicks!
