Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On a typical day in my classroom my students will be working on any number of projects. We have class assignments to work on every single day but also contest entries, special projects, and school decorations to create. My classroom is a busy place.
My students come from low socioeconomic households.
Our school is 95% free or reduced lunch. We have an Art Magnet program at our school that requires an audition to enroll. Many of my students come to school early so that they can work on their classwork or work on special projects. During this time I let them try out new materials or propose ideas for new projects. Others use this time to print research images and work in their sketchbooks.
My students are never satisfied with good enough. They are always trying to learn new techniques that will improve their skills. For many of my students art is the one place where they can excel and make their voice heard. I want to make sure that they have every opportunity available to them.
The work that my students create has been recognized locally and nationally. I want my students to be proud of the work that they produce. By entering contests and exhibitions, my students have a chance to be recognized for their hard work and creativity.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help my students in a variety of lessons. They will use acrylic paints to expand on the painting knowledge they have acquired by using inexpensive tempera paints. Using the two types of canvas that I am requesting, my students will be able to create paintings from reference images that directly correspond to the proportions of their canvas. The grid method that I use in my lessons guarantees high-quality paintings that are easy to work on and allow students to easily identify and correct errors.
I am also requesting two different types of markers that my students will use for color studies, illustrations and other classroom assignments.
The clay that I am requesting will be used by my students to give them experience with 3-dimensional art. There are many different types of art materials and I want my students to know about all of them.
The variety of art materials that I am requesting will have a direct impact on student learning.
My students will be able to create artwork in a studio environment with materials that real artists use. This artwork will go on to be displayed during a school art show. Being able to walk up to a painting in an art show and say, "I made this!" is a great feeling. I want my students to be proud of the work they do in school and not want to miss a single class.
