My Project

My TK class of diverse 4 and 5 year olds enter the classroom each day, brimming with energy and curiosity, eager to talk about their families and weekends, and radiating happiness. This is not a quiet classroom; it is vibrant and bustling! Often, we go outside to facilitate our outdoor learning. Every subject taught in school can be integrated into a garden: math, earth, physical, space, and life sciences, literacy, art, our community, health, physical education, social emotional skills, and the list goes on. For years, our school has had unused garden beds in our playground. I am prepared to revive them to enrich my students' education.

The garden will serve as a hands-on learning space for my young students, to deepen their understanding of the world around us.

Throughout the year, we will explore literature about plants and gardens, encompassing both fiction and nonfiction. We will sow seeds indoors and transplant them outdoors. The children will have the opportunity to taste, smell, and take home the food, flowers, and herbs they have nurtured.

I am thrilled to implement the techniques outlined in Charles Dowding's, No Dig Children’s Gardening Book. The "No Dig" approach avoids the traditional method of digging up weeds and preparing soil for planting. His technique requires minimal preparation and allows for immediate planting! It sounds both enjoyable and manageable for my young learners. After all, few people enjoy pulling weeds! My students will be engaged, learning, growing, and blooming!
