My Project
I recently participated in a seminar centered around Black History Consciousness, Teaching Black History Framework which impressed upon me that teaching Black history authentically can transform both history education and with that, comes hope that society will transform with it. Exposing my students to various narratives will help them see Black history as a story of self-determination, not just victimization. Through explicit teaching using materials from authentic Black voices and experiences, I will provide students with a more complete understanding of history with a focus on resilience.
The books requested with this DonorsChoose project will help me teach the story of three critical figures in recent Black history who not only fought for racial justice but serve as exemplars of resilience.
We are in a large, urban, Title I public school comprised of students from over forty different countries. We embrace our school diversity and teach about other countries' cultures and traditions. This project will help me teach our young students about the struggle for American Civil Rights for all and, with full funding, will allow me to gift every student with two books to keep at home to re-read again and again, reminding them that they too can be resilient and determine their own destiny.
