This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How do you think it feels to open a dictionary and find that the one page you need is torn out? That is what my third grade students go through when they use the dictionaries in my classroom. I work in a high-need school, where a large portion of our population are English Language Learners.
My students need intensive instruction for vocabulary development. This year, I have started to teach my third graders how to use a dictionary as a reading and writing tool. My students have been using the dictionary regularly. But I have noticed that they make comments about the condition of our dictionaries. Many times the word that they are looking for is on a page that has been torn out. I strongly believe that this is not only a turn off, but has an impact on the expectations that students may believe are placed on them. I feel that the condition of materials and the classroom environment has an impact on a students self-esteem.
With the fulfillment of this proposal, not only will my class receive 15 brand new dictionaries, but will have the sense that their education is important. Your gift will ensure that my students will develop their vocabulary in their oral and written language.
The gift of these dictionaries will enhance my student's experiences in my classroom. Students are eager to use materials that are colorful and child friendly. We have been extremely fortunate to have several proposals filled and I know first hand the difference new materials make in a classroom like mine.
