My students are tuneful, beatful, artful people! Our classroom is filled with joy, the joy that comes from making music together. We sing songs from around the world, move expressively, dance, play instruments, and create music. I teach my students that they are all musicians, and as they grow through the music program, they take charge of their own musicianship.
My students live in New York City, but most of them have not experienced live music in a theater or concert hall.
Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and many face other socioeconomic hardships. They come to our school because it is one of the only schools in the city to provide free, public, single-sex education. Because of this, many of my students travel very far by public transportation just to attend our school. They make a commitment with their families to come to school every day, work hard, and eventually complete a college degree. Their dedication inspires me to work hard for them, and I want my students to experience the live music that New York City is famous for.
My Project
New York City has so much to offer in the arts, but it can be very expensive to attend live performances. However, my goal is to provide an authentic musical experience for my students despite any financial difficulty. In New York City, that ought to include the legendary places music is made.
This project will bring my students to Carnegie Hall, the storied music venue, for the musical performance of a lifetime.
The Musical Explorers program seeks out six dynamic local musicians who hail from other countries and brings them together for two unforgettable concerts. Students learn the musician's cultural and original songs by listening, singing, and dancing. Carnegie Hall also provides colorful workbooks to enhance students' knowledge about the musician's language, traditional dress, musical heritage, and more. I have known students to talk about these concerts for years afterward; they keep asking, "When are we going back to Carnegie Hall?"
This is your chance to help immerse young children in the history of music! With your donation, you will help my students get to the great music venue, Carnegie Hall, and learn the music of other countries. What a way to make a difference!
