This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the biggest obstacles students face in high school is keeping organized. Ask them to open their folders and you're liable to find trigonometry homework from last semester next to yesterday's class notes on The Great Gatsby.

In my 18 years teaching in New York City, I've learned that students who do not keep organized tend to fall behind.

I currently teach English at a high-needs school, where more than 95 percent of the students are minorities who qualify for the free/reduced-priced lunch program. My students, in general, do not have the money for even the most basic of school supplies.

My Project

In order to combat this problem and teach my students good organization skills to prepare them for college and the world beyond, I am requesting binders (one for each student), sets of index tabs, pencil holders, page protectors, and notebooks. Having a binder will not only help students become more organized, a skill that will be utilized throughout their lives, but will enable them to see themselves as scholars and take ownership of their work. This, in my opinion, is invaluable. Students will use the indexes to create sections in their binders for homework, class notes, journal entries, and handouts. The pencil pouches will hold pencils, pens, highlighters, and sticky notes used to annotate texts.

Organization is an important key to ensuring success in school and in life.
