My Students
Often, students give up easily when they are faced with a challenging math problem. I would like my students to be more confident and enjoy learning math. Students are more likely to comprehend a skill by being involved in math centers and games.
I will be teaching second grade this year.
My school has a high number of students who are on free and reduced lunch. Students come from various backgrounds. Some of them are homeless, some live with their grandparents, and some live with one parent. I care about all my students and I personally believe that if they are given love, attention, encouragement, and inspiration, they can become successful in anything.
My Project
Money is a new skill taught in second grade and can be difficult to learn for many of my students. Some of my students also struggle with math fluency. Having the money equivalency game and decomposing numbers with addition and subtraction game will help them become more proficient in counting money and solving math problems. The yard sticks will be used to help students measure objects in the classroom when studying about measurement. These are all math tools that students will be able to apply in their daily life and in their future professions. In addition, students will learn to work on communication skills while using these resources. They will learn to share, take turns, communicate effectively, and collaborate with each other. I also want to teach students to be organized and be responsible with their materials. Thus, the folders will be used to help them organize their math papers and keep track with their assignments.
There is a Chinese proverb that I enjoy: "Tell me, I'll forget; Show me, I'll remember; Involve me, I'll understand." Students often give up easily when faced with a challenging math problem.
They get discouraged and lose confidence. My goal this year is to help my students enjoy learning math, to be confident math learners. I feel that the math games and centers will help my students be more confident and successful in math, as well as enjoy completing math tasks
