Help Us Get in Shape!

My students need materials for physical education including an activity play kit, a large parachute with a CD and activity book, bats, balls and ball bags. This will allow students to practice skills as simple as tossing and catching, hopping and skipping, and spinning and twisting.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children today do not get enough exercise. We are required to take our students out for Physical Education for about 100 minutes every week but, one problem we have is the lack of sports related materials to make Physical Education more fun.

The students I teach are high energy, enthusiastic first graders.

They attend a high ability-magnet program and really enjoy learning new concepts. I quickly realized that many of the students have never had an opportunity to learn many outdoor activities. My goal is to expose the students to some fun outdoor games. I want them to learn exercise can be fun.

My Project

I am requesting an activity kit that includes a variety of balls, jump ropes, bean bags, cones, and hula hoops. These materials will allow for hundreds of opportunities for outdoor play. They will allow students to practice skills as simple as tossing and catching, hopping and skipping, and spinning and twisting. They will also allow me to teach them to learn more sophisticated games like capture the flag as well as exciting relay races. I am also asking for some materials to teach the basics of American classic games like football, and baseball. These sports help to teach important life skills like good sportsmanship as well as cooperation. The final materials I am requesting include a large parachute with a cd and activity book. Some of my fondest memories from PE when I was young include an oversize parachute. There are many fun games the students can play with a parachute and it also connects to our science standards involving air and wind.

The obesity rates in children is staggering.

I believe that giving students opportunities to see that exercise can be fun can create life long changes. First grade is such an important developmental year.
