My Students

The seventh grade students at our rural Eastern North Carolina school are focused on getting to and through college, despite the challenges they face living in a low-income setting.

They are excited to grow their knowledge, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful later in life.

They work with urgency and grit to reach their goals, and they truly understand that their work and learning is never done. They are eager to make a difference in their lives, the lives of their families, and in their community as a whole.

My Project

Our school is located in a food desert. This is challenging for our students, as they do not have access to fresh produce, which makes healthy eating a challenge. Recently, our students have been involved in conversations about how they can fix this problem, and they decided that starting a school garden would be the best solution. After brainstorming, my students decided our best chance of turning their dream into reality was through a DonorsChoose.org project.

In our school garden, students will grow healthy produce, providing them with nutritious food, ultimately improving their health, their families' and that of our community as a whole.

Students will plant the seeds in our incubator, and then transplant them outside. Beans and other tall plants will climb the trellis. Students will use the hats to shade their faces from the sun, and will use the gardening knee pads to protect their knees while working.

As our produce comes in, students will learn how to prepare nutrient dense meals through our Cooking Club, and will take home healthy vegetables and fruit to share with their families. This will ensure students are able to continue healthy eating habits all year round, as they will establish healthy habits that endure even in the winter months.

At the end of the season, we will collect the seeds from the plants we are growing so that we can continue to grow new vegetables year after year. This means that long term our garden will be sustainable. This project will enable our students to develop healthy eating habits that will endure throughout their lives, and the skills they learn in will ensure that they have the ability to continue caring for themselves even after they graduate.
