My students need literature that can be used to connect math to stories. Books like "How much is a million?" help students make connections to math concepts which might otherwise seem too abstract for them.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hard-working, inquisitive second-language learners who come from families where Spanish is the primary language. They are taught in a bilingual setting so they can then transfer their academic skills and strategies to learning English Language Arts.
As research has shown, being bilingual is an asset to students, and these students work very hard to make sure they keep their native language while succeeding in English, also.
Students not only learn Spanish language arts, but also English language development, and English language arts.
They are curious, inquisitive, and smart. However, many come from families where their parents did not get a high school education or even speak English, which makes their progress in our educational system harder than for those who come from more privileged backgrounds. Almost 100% of my class is also eligible for free lunch, meaning they have limited funds and do not have access to some resources that more well off students can access.
My Project
Books like The Grouchy Ladybug. Two of Everything, and A Three Hat Day are engaging, entertaining ways of getting students interested in abstract math concepts. Many students have a hard time grasping the concept of what multiplication or division is, even though they might have memorized all the math facts for that one test they take that ONE time.
Rote memorization has been shown to last only short term, and that many adults who memorized their math facts in school can no longer recall them.
We are trying to help our students become more math literate by making math come alive to them, and these books will help students visualize and engage in the math practices.
